Illustrated documentary
City of Campbelltown · This is My Campbelltown
Ten local people, ten journeys to Campbelltown, told with real art direction.
City of Campbelltown
Campbelltown in South Australia is a culturally diverse community, and over a third of its residents were born overseas. This is My Campbelltown asked ten local people to share how they came to call it home.
The brief
A long piece built on personal stories of migration. The visuals had to carry warmth and respect, and feel like the people telling them, not like a council data graphic.
The approach
A painterly, textured world: a hand-treated world map with dashed lines tracing each journey to Australia, watercolour scenes of food and family, and illustrated portraits of the people behind the stories. It runs for around 14 minutes.
Hugh Fenton of Enlightening Films directed and edited the film. I storyboarded and animated sequences and the titles, alongside animator Alannah Costanzo. It premiered at the council's Harmony Week screening in March 2021.
