Community explainer

Dept for Energy and Mining · Our Electricity

Explaining prepaid power to Aboriginal communities, in their own language.

SA Department for Energy and Mining

The SA Department for Energy and Mining needed to explain how electricity works, and how to prepay for it, to Aboriginal communities in South Australia. A standard government video in English wasn't going to cut it.

The brief

The videos had to make sense to people who don't think of power the way a policy document does, and carry narration and on-screen text in language.

The approach

I made two illustrated stories: The Story of Our Electricity, which explains what power is and how it reaches the house, and How to Prepay for Electricity, which walks through buying credit and keeping the lights on.

Every scene was designed to make sense on its own, without leaning on English. Simple shapes, warm colours and clear actions do the explaining.
